Washington, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Mullin (CA-15) today voted against the Default On America Act. This ill-advised legislation would reverse climate action, increase housing costs, harm access to preschool and child care, and threaten benefits to thousands in California’s 15th Congressional District.

“Devastating cuts to programs that millions of families rely on in my district, and across the country, are fiscally and morally irresponsible. The regressive Default On America Act also doesn’t bring us closer to preventing a debt default,” Mullin said. “By reversing critical clean energy investments and threatening food security, the legislation’s harmful effects would be far-reaching. In California alone, more than two million people would be at risk of losing Medicaid coverage. It’s time to stop playing political games and get to work on building a budget that works for Americans and invests in our children’s future.”

Extreme benefit cuts in the Default On America Act would hurt people across CA-15 in multiple ways:

  1. Put 33,000 people at risk of losing Medicaid coverage;
  2. Threaten access to food assistance for 33,000 families;
  3. Hurt 105,000 K-12 children by cutting federal funds for education;
  4. Increase housing costs for 52,200 people; and
  5. Jeopardize health benefits for 15,000 veterans.
By refusing to act now to prevent a default, House Republicans are threatening an economic disaster that will devastate Americans. In CA-15, a default on our debt would:

  1. Kill about 7,800 jobs as unemployment doubles;
  2. Threaten the retirement savings of 100,200 people;
  3. Put Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs health benefits at risk for 229,000 people; and
  4. Jeopardize Social Security payments for 70,000 seniors.
